Oracy for Schools

Oracyforschools.co.uk and the minibook, “Help Me Find My Voice” help you unlock the voice of every child. Think about children who aren’t all-round reticent, but “playground confident, classroom shy” or who aren’t really listening, just waiting for their chance to speak. We have practical principles, implemented in fun and engaging ways, to overcome barriers to speaking and make sure every child’s voice is heard.

We’ve been getting kids talking for fifteen years at The Philosophy Man, so it’s not just about the talk but the depth of thinking behind it. Our other experience  in philosophy for children, outdoor education, challenging the most able and other classroom contexts, so whether you want deeper thinking through dialogue. We work directly with children week-in, week-out, sometimes demonstrating with classes and unpicking why it worked in twilight training, or running whole year-group events that develop oracy, leadership and teamwork.

Check out our resources too, including Sticky Questions, a whole-school, year-round home-to-school oracy programme for primary schools that costs less than 4p per week per child.

Poetry by Heart

Poetry By Heart is the nation's premier poetry speaking competition. Founded in 2013, it is poetry's biggest, most inclusive and effective celebration. It is free and open to all pupils in key stages 2 to 5.

It has inspired measurable improvement in the quality of poetry provision in schools. All feedback - from teachers, students, parents - proves that participation is both enjoyable and effective. Teachers highlight greater confidence in performing a poem for others as a learning gain for pupils, alongside the development of skills related to oracy.

“Poetry By Heart [is the perfect companion for Voice 21] as the competition supports students to develop and perfect their oracy skills. Learning how to present to an audience, how to manage pace and timing, as well as developing eye contact, body language and gesture, are all crucial ingredients in developing effective spoken communication. But most importantly, we love how Poetry by Heart has taken a concept that had fallen out of fashion and transformed it into a thriving national competition that students from all backgrounds can benefit from and enjoy.” Voice 21 former CEO Beccy Earnshaw

sPEECH & LANGUAGE LINK

Speech and language skills are the foundations of oracy, literacy and ultimately educational attainment. Addressing speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in a timely fashion is an essential step to ensuring all students can reach their potential. Our award-winning, web-based SLCN packages were created by our team of specialist speech and language therapists to help schools provide this support. Speech Link and Language Link include standardised assessments enabling school staff to quickly and reliably screen all students, enabling early identification of SLCN. Our evidence based, therapist designed interventions can be used with all those identified; those with more severe needs are also flagged for discussion with specialists. Training is included and can be used by unlimited staff and repeated at no extra cost. All this is backed up by our specialist help desk, including our team of therapists, only a phone call away for all our subscribers.
